W’burg police apprehend Georgia fugitive

A vehicle accident early Friday evening led to the arrest of a Williamsburg man, who is a wanted fugitive from the state of Georgia.
Dustin Oyer was charged with being a fugitive from another state.
Dustin M. Oyer, 34, of Sawmill Hollow Road, agreed to waive extradition to Georgia during his arraignment Monday morning in Whitley District Court.
About 6:51 p.m. Friday, Williamsburg Police Sgt. Brandon White and Officer Trevor Teague responded to a vehicle collision at the intersection of Main Street and Brush Arbor Road.
Oyer was a passenger in one of the vehicles and when police ran his name through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, they learned Oyer was allegedly wanted in Georgia, according to his arrest warrant in the fugitive from another state case.
On Feb. 9, 2018, a superior court judge issued a bench warrant for Oyer when he failed to show up for court in connection to a 2016 case where he faces two counts of criminal attempt to commit a felony and one count of use of communications facilities in drug transaction, according to a court document.
On April 11, 2018, Whitfield County, Georgia officials filed a charge of bail jumping-leaving the state against Oyer, who – while out on bond – failed to appear in court on Feb. 9, 2018, and left the state, according to a court document.
Oyer was also charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance following Friday’s vehicle accident.
White observed a baggy with a white powder substance in the floorboard of his police vehicle when he arrived at the Whitley County Detention Center, according to an arrest citation.
The baggie was between Oyer’s feet and he allegedly told police that the substance was cocaine, White wrote on an arrest citation.
Oyer pleaded not guilty to the charge during his arraignment Monday morning in Whitley District Court.
Judge Fred White appointed the public advocate’s office to represent Oyer, scheduled an Aug. 6 preliminary hearing in his case and set a $10,000 cash bond.
