W’burg man arrested after bizarre 911 call

A bizarre 911 call from a man early Saturday morning lead to the arrest of one person on multiple charges.

Matthew Thomas is charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and fleeing police after a bizarre 911 call early Saturday morning.

About 1:30 a.m., Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Hensley responded to a disturbance at a Highway 904 residence after being advised that a man had dialed 911 and claimed that people in his front yard were committing murder and rape and threatening arson, according to a sheriff’s department release.

When Hensley and Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Ridener arrived at the scene, they found nobody outside of the residence, but there were signs of activity inside the home.

While Hensley was at the back door, he heard a loud noise coming from the front of the home.

Matthew W. Thomas, 27, jumped out the front window and attempted to flee, but was caught by Ridener, according to an arrest citation.

Thomas was allegedly sweating when police captured him, had pinpoint pupils and was still seeing people trying to get him, according to an arrest citation.

Police found two big knives in Thomas’ waistband, and a pill bottle with three different types of pills that had someone else’s name blacked out, according an arrest citation.

Thomas told police that he found the pills in his uncle’s toolbox and that they were sleeping pills, an arrest citation stated.

Thomas was taken into custody without incident and lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.

Hensley charged him with second-degree fleeing or evading police, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, public intoxication, prescription of a controlled substance not in its original container and three counts of illegal possession of a legend drug.

Thomas pleaded not guilty to all the charges during his arraignment Monday in Whitley District Court.

Judge Fred White scheduled a Feb. 19 pre-trial conference in his case and set a $1,500 cash bond.
