W’burg man accused of assaulting son repeatedly with hammer

A Williamsburg man remains in jail this week after police say he hit his son with a hammer during a domestic dispute.

The incident occurred in the Hemlock community of Whitley County. Police got the call at around 4:30 p.m. July 21. Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Johnny Miller is investigating the case.

Fifty-seven-year-old William Helbig was arrested and charged with first-degree assault in connection with the investigation. He is in the Whitley County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.

According to authorities, Helbig and his son got into a verbal argument at as residence on Nicky Lane. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation. Helbig then, allegedly, struck his son in the hand and head with a hammer repeatedly.

The son was transported to Baptist Health Corbin for treatment. Helbig was arrested without incident.

Deputy Miller is continuing the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Sheriff Colan Harrell and deputies Mike Lawson and Cody Harrell.
