Wanted murder suspect arrested

Eric Cassidy was arrested Friday in connection with a May indictment for murder.

A Corbin man indicted in May on a murder charge in connection with a fatal traffic crash in which he was allegedly driving under the influence has been taken into custody.

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 34-year-old Eric J. Cassidy last Friday at a residence on Watch Road off of U.S. 25E in Knox County.

Officials with the sheriff’s department said the U.S. Marshal’s Service received a tip concerning Cassidy’s whereabouts and passed it along to them.

Deputies, led by Detective Jason Back and Captain Chuck Johnson responded to the location and took Cassidy into custody without incident.

Cassidy was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Facility where he is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.

Cassidy is scheduled to appear in Laurel Circuit Court at 9 a.m. Monday.

Judge Lay is presiding over the case.

The crash occurred November 30 on Ky. 229 in southern Laurel County.

According to officials from the sheriff’s department, Cassidy, who was travelling south in a Ford Explorer SUV, crossed the centerline striking the Chevrolet car driven by 47-year-old Sherry King of Barbourville.

The collision sent King’s car over an embankment where it overturned.

King was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Through investigation, it was determined that Cassidy was operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs,” officials with the sheriff’s department stated.

Cassidy was indicted on charges of murder, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants – second offense and second-degree persistent felony offender.
