VOLLEYBALL REGION
The 13th Region Volleyball Tournament will be played at Bell County High School beginning Monday with defending champion, South Laurel taking on Whitley County in the first game of the night.
The teams split during the regular season with South Laurel taking a close game at Whitley County 2-1 (27-25, 15-25, 25-19), but it was the Lady Colonels winning at South Laurel earlier this month, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17.
The Lady Colonels are led by the inside play of Alyssa Monhollen and the setting of Carly Louthan. Breanna Allen provides the leadership for the Lady Cardinals.
Whitley County comes into the tournament with the winningest record, 19-12. The Lady Cardinals are 14-20 on the season.
The second game of the night will feature the Middlesboro, the surprise winner out of District 52, taking on Jackson County, the runner-up in District 49. Middlesboro lost their only meeting with Jackson County in the 13th Region All “A” Classic back in August.
Middlesboro comes in with a 17-12 record while Jackson County is 16-13.
Tuesday it will be Clay County taking on Harlan County in the first game of the night. The Lady Bears opened the season strong and won 10 of their first 13 games. Harlan County beat Clay County 2-1 in their lone meeting of the season. Harlan County is 15-8 while Clay County comes in with a 13-7 mark.
The nightcap and final first round game will feature the Corbin Lady Redhounds, the 50th District champion against 51st District runner-up, Knox Central. The Lady Redhounds led by the play of inside hitter, Vanessa Wiseman, is 18-16 on the season. They defeated Knox Central twice during the regular season.
The Lady Panthers are 4-16 on the year.
Corbin and South Laurel are the only two teams that have won the 13th region during its current format.
The semifinals have been set for Thursday with the championship game Friday, Oct. 21.
