VIDEO: Police question suspects in connection with Hometown Bank robbery
In their efforts to find the man who robbed Hometown Bank of Corbin on Falls Hwy. Tuesday morning, police questioned the registered owner of the getaway car.
"The lady told us that she had sold the car in the parking lot of the Williamsburg Walmart back in June or July," said Corbin Police Major Rob Jones. "We spoke with several of her family members who confirmed that."
Police brought the woman, whose name was not released, in for questioning Tuesday night several hours after the getaway car was found parked behind a home in the Faber community.
According to Whitley County Sheriff Colin Harrell, about 1:30 p.m. a white male came into the bank, pointed an automatic pistol at the teller and demanded money. The money was placed in a black bag the robber brought with him. He then ran out the door and jumped back into a white Chrysler Sebring and fled the scene, traveling south of U.S. 25W.
Harrell said the man had blond hair, possibly from a wig and was wearing sunglasses, a tan toboggan hat, a hood UK sweatshirt and sweat pants.
"He was in and out in just a couple of minutes," Harrell said.
Officers noted that video surveillance of the car showed it had no hubcaps.
Harrell noted that bank employees gave law enforcement a good starting point when several of the employees followed the robber outside, jumped into their vehicles and then followed the getaway car a short distance down Falls Hwy.
Corbin Police, Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies, Whitley County Constables and Kentucky State Police spent the afternoon combing the streets and roads in Whitley County in search of the car.
About 5 p.m., Harrell said the car was found by a house hunter as he looked at a house on Eatontown Road. When the man went to the back of the house, the car was parked there. Knowing that police were searching for it based on media broadcasts throughout the day, the man then contacted police "That is within two miles of the bank," Harrell said.
Based on the car and the description of the robber, Harrell said investigators believe he is responsible for four other bank robberies that occurred in Barbourville, McCreary County and Jellico, Tenn. within the last five months.
According to Kentucky State Police, on June 5 and unidentified white male wearing a wig and armed with a handgun walked into the Bank of McCreary County on South U.S. 27 in the Pine Knot Community. He was seen leaving the in a black four-door passenger car that was waiting at the rear of the bank.
On June 9, a white man, wearing khaki shorts, flip-flops, sunglasses and a reddish-brown wig entered the First Volunteer Bank in Jellico. He presented a note to the teller demanding money and fled the scene.
In early August, Commercial Bank in Barbourville was robbed and on Aug. 19 Forcht Bank in Barbourville was the target.
According to Barbourville Police Chief Mike Broughton the robber at Forcht Bank was wearing a blonde wig and brandished a black handgun as he demanded money from the tellers.
He fled the scene in a white as the passenger in a white car with what Broughton described as several distinct features.
"The thing that sticks out to me is that it had a Confederate decal above the keyhole on the trunk. It was also missing a hubcap on the front passenger side," Broughton said.
Harell said the Federal Bureau of Investigation has elected to lead the investigation into the robbery.
"Bank robbery constitutes a federal crime because of the FDIC," Harrell explained. Corbin Police, Kentucky State Police and Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputies are assisting in the investigation. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, 549-6006, Corbin Police, 528-1122 or Kentucky State Police, 878-6622. Russ that is ridiculous. I work at a financial institution and have been thru several robberies.
The main thing of importance when this happens is to ensure that everyone remains SAFE. That includes employees as well as any customers that might be in the branch. To have an employee or a customer brandishing a gun would escalate the situation and likely cause someone to be hurt. Badly.
And Lula, don’t worry about what they are saying. Obviously by their grammar and spelling they have NO education and know nothing about what they are talking about.
psst,,,,, psst Betty Jo, I think Lula use to be a bad girl cause she can’t own a gun anymore she said,,LMAO,,
Thanks sure glad you agree with me
Well Lula, Maybe you are the type of person that use to be a robber an thats why ya not allowed to own a gun nomore as you said, lol, But I still think these are great ideas an can easly be done an cheap,,
Lula, If an old lady working at a bank an can’t remeber things then she can’t remember how to count money an don’t need to be working there noways huh,,An if she is working there then it will be the owners fault an an the owner needs to be sued huh,,
An Betty Jo,,, I really really thank you very much, It’s a shame that there are folks that won’t even do nothing at all sucks as the gov. or bank owners or even store that won’t do much of anything that will stop these robberys,, But I can promise one thing for sure, An that is that my own home is nothing at all to worrie about for if somebody wants to rob, Cause I like the ideas an know for facts that they work great, lol, I not much of a talker but do have great ideas for lots of stuff, I am deaf but know when somebody is behind me,,
Wow,lol, Well Lula there isn’t many old folks working at banks no more,, An I did say train pepole but I agree about the lawsuits,, But there are many ways to keep any an all banks an homes from being rob, An on top of everything, Anybody that rob’s an gets hurt there should be a law that says the robber can not come back an sue of any kind,
Whatever, we all know you were referring to yourself little miss “Lula.” Besides, i’m sure you couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if you COULD carry a gun.
Well Betty Jo…you must be Russ’s little girl friend…because that is just the worst idea ever!!! I mean, I am pretty old but that doesn’t mean that I was talking about me. And besides I’m not even allowed to carry a gun anymore
Don’t you worry about her Russ. I still think your idea is amazing and your still my hero baby. Lula’s just worried about herself. She’s probably that old lady that works in the bank and can’t remember shiz! You stick with your idea.
Hey Russ…whats gonna happen when the little old bank teller freaks out…shoots everyone in the bank because she can’t remember anything she was taught in her gun training an then can’t remember which button is which and locks everyone in the trap 8x8x10 room under the floor…I’m thinkin lawsuite
Russ, you are my hero! I think your idea is brilliant..
criminals think they are always smater than the police. But they will evenually get caught!!! Especially if there is a reward, the way the economy is right now. If you voted for obama for President/PAT YOURSELF ON YHE BACK RIGHT NOW!!! THAT’S WHY EVERYTHING IS SO FUKD ^
Yea thats very true an add bullet proof glass, But then again if they did do that then the Robber mite take a person out the door with em till he or she is outside, I think the workers should have a gun an train to use it, They would be better off to build a 8ft X 8ft X 10ft trap door at the front door on the outside so if it happens again the the works just push a button an it will open an the robbers fall’s in it till cops get there,
To stop most robberies, the banks need to have a button under all cashiers areas that locks the outside door automatically and then when the robber rushes out, they should lock the inside door , so he/she will be locked inside the two doors. It may be costly, but it will save alot of time and money.
