Vannatter retires from Army after 30 years of service

Former Corbin resident Colonel Marvin “Marty” Vannatter, Jr. recently retired from the United States Army after 30 years of dedicated service.

Colonel Vannatter, a Distinguished Military Graduate of the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Data Processing and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry in 1990.

Serving as Platoon Leader, during his initial tour, in the 8th Infantry Division at Mannhelm, Germany, he was as an Executive Officer. Colonel Vannatter was then branch detailed into the Adjutant General Corps and attended the Captain Career Course at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, IN. From there, Vannatter’s duties have taken him all around the world to places such as Haiti, Korea, Kuwait, Germany, Afghanistan, the Netherlands, as well as many places within the United States including Alabama, Hawaii, Alaska, Rhode Island, North Carolina, etc.

An accomplished serviceman, Vannatter earned several master degrees during his time in the army and has held many positions, including but not limited to: Brigade S1 for the 18th Personnel Group, Battalion S3, Postal Company Commander for the 129th Postal Company, Systems Automation Manager for Pacific Automation Server Site in Korea, 25th Infantry Division G1 Plans and Operations Officer, Division Strength Manager and Executive Officer for the 556 Personal Services Battalion in Hawaii, G1 Planner and G3 Exercises in the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, Military Advisor to the NATO Senior Civilian Representative, G1 for United States Army – Alaska, Battalion Commander, Allied Forces Northern Europe, and G1 at the Main Command Post where he split time between Shaw AFB and Kuwait.

He has obtained a multitude of awards, which include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2nd OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (3rd OLC), the Joint Staff Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (3rd OLC), the Joint Staff Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (3rd OLC), the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal (2nd Award), the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Expert Infantryman Badge.

Vannatter is happily married to his wife of 31 years, Julie Mobley Vannatter, who grew up in the area of London. They share two children, Ryan and Mary, who are both currently attending college.

Colonel Marvin “Marty” Vannatter Jr. is the son of Brenda and Edward Moses of Corbin, who are very proud their son’s accomplishments.

His wife Julie is the daughter of Rev. Joe and Judy Mobley of London.
