Utility pole snapped in half after wreck

The only fatality during a single-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon on Ky. 92E was that of a utility pole, which was snapped in two after being struck by an SUV.

The accident happened about 3:45 p.m. on Ky. 92E about 12 miles east of Williamsburg.

Coleman Lacy, 20, of Ft. Mitchell, was driving east on the wet road when he lost control of the vehicle, went off the side of the roadway and struck the utility pole near the driver’s side door.

“He came around the curve after it just started raining. I guess he was going too fast for the curve with the rain, lost control, went off the roadway and cut a telephone pole in half,” said Whitley County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kirk Mays, who investigated the accident.

“The driver is pretty lucky. The telephone pole actually hit right in the door.”

The back end of the vehicle came to rest on about two feet of the pole that was left sticking out of the ground. The remainder of the severed pole was resting on the ground beside the 2003 white Honda Pilot leaning at about 70-degree angle and partially held up by guide wires on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.

Mays said that Lacy complained of some pain to his knee and passenger Tyler Rhodes, 21, of Siler, complained of some facial injuries that were apparently caused by the airbag deployment.

Both were checked out at the scene by Whitley County EMS and were expected to go to a local hospital for further examination, but Mays said he didn’t know if they were planning to go by ambulance or personal vehicle.

Both men were out of the vehicle when emergency workers arrived on the scene.
