The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets pulled off an exciting win over the Corbin Redhounds Friday night. It was the first win over Corbin since 1998.
Corbin played the game without three players, Travis Smith, Hunter Grubb and Eric Jones.
The game was close most of the way, but the Jackets did take a 51-39 lead when Coach Tony Pietrowski was called for a technical late in the game. However, the Redhounds responded with a 10-4 run in the final :42 and got to within six, the final margin, 55-49.
Williamsburg (7-9) gained the lead in the first quarter with a quick 9-2 run as Skylar Griffith, Dalton Sizemore and Cameron Smoak scored for the Yellow Jackets. The only basket Corbin was able to put through the net came on a jumper by junior Zach Farley.
Corbin (7-6) was able to close the gap in the last three minutes to 14-10 as junior center Robbie Igo went inside for two baskets and eighth-grader Trevor Hill hit a 3-pointer.
Williamsburg pushed the lead out to nine at the start of the second quarter when Jarod Barton hit a 3-pointer and Corey Shelton followed with a basket for a 19-10 lead before Corbin called a time-out.
The Redhounds responded with an 8-2 run of their own as Caleb Maguet scored from 3-point range and was fouled. He had a rare four-point play. Maguet then knocked down a 3-pointer that had the Redhounds within 21-18.
However, the Jackets got back-to-back baskets by Barton and Shelton to push the lead out to 25-18. Donnie Wilson cut the lead to 25-21 at the half with a buzzer beater.
Corbin had its best quarter of the game in the third period when the offense put up 15 points while holding Williamsburg to eight. The result was a 36-33 Corbin lead entering the final frame.
Igo had six points in the quarter while Maguet added another 3-point basket.
Smoak and Barton scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter and the lead changed hands once again before Pietrowski called a time-out.
Hill responded after the time-out with a 3-pointer for the Corbin lead. That would be the last lead for the Redhounds as Williamsburg went on a 14-0 run. Sizemore gave Williamsburg the lead for good with a 3-pointer coming out of a Yellow Jackets’ time-out. A free throw and a 3-pointer by Barton pushed the Jackets ahead, 44-39 with 2:30 left in the game.
After Sizemore scored and Williamsburg Coach Patrick Robinson called a time-out, Pietrowski was called for a technical after a foul. The Jackets scored five points as a result of the situation and led 51-39 after Griffith and Barton hit five-of-six from the line.
The Redhounds rallied in the final 42 seconds, outscoring Williamsburg 10-4.
Barton had a big night for the Jackets with 25 points. Sizemore added 10 points.
Corbin was led by Maguet’s 12 points. Farley and Igo tossed in 11 points each.
The Jackets continued their winning ways Saturday with a 66-39 win over the Lynn Camp Wildcats.

It was the Griffith brothers, Skylar and Andrew, leading the Yellow Jackets with a combined 13 points. Skyler had eight points including two three-pointers while Andrew went inside for five points including one three-point play.
A 16-5 start in the third quarter saw Williamsburg take a 51-14 lead on back-to-back baskets by Shelton.
