UPDATED: Teen hurt after being hit while riding bicycle on Corbin roadway

A teenage girl was injured on a southern Laurel County roadway Thursday morning after being struck by a car while riding her motorcycle.
Police are now saying the 17-year-old victim of the accident, Lorrainia Gabbard, of Corbin, was riding a NEXT BMX bicycle on the side of Byerly Road with her boyfriend at about 10:43 a.m. when the accident ocurred. According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Richie Baxter, who is investigating the crash, the girl was riding against the flow of traffic at the time and appeared to have gotten scared when an oncoming vehicle tried to avoid her.
"The car actually tried to go around them a little bit to give them room. The girl kind of panicked and went to the right and actually went into the path of the car," Baxter said.
Jessica Stanfill, 33, of Corbin, was driving the Jeep Patriot that struck the girl. She was interviewed by police and released from the scene. Authorities do not suspect any drug or alcohol involvement. Neither Stanfill nor the two passengers in her vehicle sustained any injuries.
The girl was taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center by ambulance to be treated. She suffered injuries to one of her legs. The passenger side mirror of the vehicle that struck her was knocked off and there was some other minor damage.
Baxter is in charge of the investigation into the accident. He was assisted at the scene by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, the West Knox Volunteer Fire Department and the Laurel County Rescue Squad.
