UPDATED: Foul play suspected in case of woman found dead in W’burg apartment; victim identified

 Williamsburg police suspect foul play in the death of a 29-year-old woman, who was found dead inside her Crisp Court Apartment early Friday afternoon.

So far authorities are releasing few details about the investigation but say the woman appeared to have been dead for "numerous days" before her remains were discovered shortly before 12:30 p.m.

Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley pronounced the victim dead at 12:35 p.m. and an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday morning at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort.

The victim is being identified as 29-year-old Amy N. Freeman.

Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird said his officers were at the Crisp Court Apartment Complex on an unrelated matter Friday when a friend Freeman’s discovered her body.

"They (officers) had just made an arrest on an individual," Bird said. "One of the officers was flagged down by a female, who was hysterical."

Bird said the victim’s friend hadn’t seen her in a couple of weeks and went to her apartment to check on her.

After knocking at the door several times the friend got no response, and entered the apartment through a side window that was unlocked and discovered Freeman’s body.

"The preliminary investigation at the scene leads us to believe that there was foul play but we can’t confirm that until after the autopsy," Bird noted. "Things we saw at the crime scene during the investigation leads us to believe that there may have been a struggle."

Authorities said there were no obvious signs of foul play on the body, such as gunshot or stab wounds, but they cautioned that the body was in a state of decay so more won’t be known until the autopsy is conducted.

Bird said that authorities do have some "persons of interest" in the case but no arrests have been made.

So far authorities haven’t released a possible motive in the case.

Bird said Freeman lived alone and was apparently unemployed. She had no car.

There were no obvious signs of burglary in the apartment, but police aren’t ruling out a possible robbery.

Bird said the victim had some minor arrests for drugs but nothing major and the arrests were consistent with just recreational drug use.

Williamsburg Police Detective Bobby Freeman and Croley are leading the investigation into the case. Bird and Williamsburg Police K-9 Officer Brandon Prewitt assisted with the investigation.
