A Corbin man was pronounced dead at Baptist Health Corbin Thursday morning following a two-vehicle wreck on Cumberland Gap Parkway.
Kentucky State Police identified the victim as 77-year-old Willard H. Eaton.
The wreck occurred about 8 a.m. when a Chevy Suburban SUV broadsided Eaton’s Toyota Camry as he attempted to turn left out of Union Plaza.
The driver of the Suburban, whom police identified as Christpher L. Davis, 27, of Guntersville, Ala. was later taken to the hospital.
West Knox firefighters said they were paged to the scene at 8:01 a.m. for an accident with injuries.
Chief Daryl Baker said firefighters had to use the Jaws-of-Life to extricate Eaton from the Camry, cutting off the front and rear doors on the left side and the “B” support post that separates the doors.
“He was unresponsive,” Baker said the Eaton.
West Cumberland Gap Parkway between U.S. 25 and Ky. 1223 was closed to traffic as emergency personnel worked to clear the scene and Kentucky State Police accident reconstructionists examined the scene.
KSP Trooper Lloyd Cochran, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London, stated neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the wreck. Eaton was not wearing a seatbelt.
Kentucky State Police Accident Reconstructionist Trooper Eric Moore is leading the investigation.
Trooper Michelle Lunsford, London-Laurel County Rescue Squad and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County assisted at the scene.
