UPDATED: Arrest of Engineer Street Bridge vandal ‘imminent,’ police say
Corbin Police have received seven tips since Friday that investigators have described as "solid" as they try to identify the woman and two children seen throwing planter boxes from the Engineer Street Bridge on Sept. 15.
Corbin Police Sgt. Bill Rose said he has been able to eliminate one of the people named in the tips and is following up on the others.
"One thing I am glad of is that people are not calling just to try to get someone in trouble," Rose said. "The people I have interviewed are convinced they know the woman in the video."
Rose said he will continue to follow up on any tips.
According to Corbin Mayor Willard McBurney, video from surveillance cameras shows the woman, a child about 12 years old and a smaller child taking five planter boxes from the bridge railing and throwing them into the creek. According to the time stamp on the video, the incident happened at 2:25 p.m.
Corbin Police Chief David Campbell said Tuesday the authorities have a "person of great interest" in the case and said an arrest was "imminent."
"They can be seen just picking the boxes up from the railing and tossing them into the creek," McBurney said.
Though he can’t say for certain, McBurney said the perpetrators were, likely, trying to hit the ducks that live around the bridge.
Additional video shows the older child moving one of the large planters closer to the railing while the woman walks by. She makes no attempt to prevent the child from moving the planter or admonishes the child.
"That burns me up," McBurney said of the incident, adding it is the third time it has happened.
City workers recovered the five boxes from the creek. McBurney said two of them might be able to be used again.
"One of them was broken into pieces and two others are probably unusable," McBurney said.
Video of the suspects may be viewed at www.thenewsjournal.net.
Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to contact Corbin Police, 528-1122. City officials are offering a $500 reward.

OMG, it is still accepting donations! Fantastic example of a creative fundraising effort that raised $10,000 in 48 hours to build a classroom at the school in Tanzania.

Don Smith: No problem with posting three times to triple rebut the absolute foolishness of Jean’s post. I have spoken to eye witnesses during my youth growing up in Corbin. While the conduct was insensitive, there were no lynchings, only threats of lynchings.
It addition, the Engineer Street Bridge was probably not in place in 1919. It is an old railroad bridge which was donated and installed in sections. My guess is that in 1919
the only bridge over Lynn Camp Creek was on Master Street near Henry Hopper’s home and general store.
one is a woman she is 34 or 35 other is little girl about 3 and the other is a boy he is 12 he attends lynn camp
This look like Carrie Dixion dont know the other girl
but it also looks like the lady that works at the GNC store n Corbin
Oh great! A piece of sh!t raising more little pieces of sh!t.
i do know these ppl in video its clear who they are
I’ve rented the video from the library about Corbin, very sad. I am waiting for everyone to be the same color so when someone is mad at me it will be because they are mad at me and not the color I am. God Bless you all and if they have a video I would like to see it because I walk that bridge quite often and this is the first I have ever heard about the flowers.
wow! Three times…lol.. it’s not you Jean posting more than once. It’s the site obviously. Wish I could delete my extra ones but I can’t. Sorry.

There were hangings… well at least one time. A girl told her parents that she had been raped by several black men when the truth was, she had been with her boyfriend and was afraid of being pregnant. Times being so backwards, they took her word for it immediately and had a lynching. I apologize because I can’t think of the name of the documentary that discusses this. But it won awards. Try googling it to see if you can find anything. The documentary even has pictures of the poor men who were blamed. Recent enough to where my mother remembered some of the older people talking about it when she was a child.

Sorry to post 3 times!
Sorry to post twice!
Jean—- There were not several hundred African American or mixed race families herded on rail cars and no one was hanged. The people that were made to leave were workers from Knoxville who were helping expand the L&N railroad yards in Corbin. It was not 1908,but October 19,1919.Several African Americans were hidden by their white employers. This information is on the( Notable Kentucky African Americans Database Website)Word of Mouth History seldom factual, but usually made to impress those being being told the tales.
How about making the videos public? Then if anyone recognizes her they can let the authorities know. And MAYBE the next “brilliant” person who has such a “brilliant” idea might think twice before showing how STUPID they really are. Sorry, just upset over such selfishness.

Incredible. And she’s allowed to continue to raise her children. Anyone that totally ignorant should not be able to keep them. Why would society want her to teach a dog anything much less a child!!!
Anyone who is less than 80 years old probably doesn’t know that the Engineer st bridge has a dark history. In the last century around 1908 or so give or take a few years, the founding fathers of Corbin herded several hundred families on train box cars and made them leave town. The ones that refused to go were “Hung From The Engineer Street Bridge By The Neck Until Dead”. And you ask who were the families? Why it was the African Americans/Black/Negro/Mulatto, who dared stand up to the White man and his bigotry and Whitley County Corruption. I remeber my Grandfather telling me about it, and he was born in 1876, so he was a reliable source. Several prominent people of the Masonic order back then were behind it along with the KKK. It was before the Masonic Lodge changed it’s name to the now renamed lodge “Hugh Harris”. The members of the Masonic lodge resigned and they closed the lodge and created a new lodge. I’ve been a member of the order for 25 years and have seen many lodge members that were politicians and eventually sent to prison. Not state but Federal prison. If you don’t believe me call Allen Dizney, he is the self appointed town historian. Many years ago there was a sign on both ends of town that said, “NIG#$# DON’T LET THE SUN SET ON YOUR HEAD IN CORBIN”. Just replace the #$# with GER and you will understand what I am referring to. The KKK is alive and well in Corbin and McCreary County but it’s now the KKKK, they added a letter. Don’t believe me? Visit the website called “The Southern Poverty Law Center”. The city needs to put concrete flower boxes on the bridge and pack them with sand, that way it would take a strong person to move them.
If they catch her they should just shoot her on sight.
I wouldn’t doubt if drugs played a part in this. We need to rid our community of drugs. Pray that we can make this happen.
If they catch the people responsible they should have to pay to replace all the flowers then water them and take care of them for 20 years.
This is very sad, someone ought to be ashamed of themselves. Its a beautiful walk, a great place to take pictures and enjoy the ducks. My grandkids love to go and feed the ducks. How can anyone be so cruel to my town. With the grace of God I hope you get them so this never happens again.
You can’t have anything nice in this world because idiots like this will destroy it. What a shame!
