Update: Corbin Police arrest man who fired rifle shots outside hospital

A Harrodsburg man remains lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center in lieu of a $25,000 cash bond after he allegedly admitted to firing three rounds from a .22-caliber rifle on Jan. 29 while outside of Baptist Health Corbin from a truck he was attempting to steal.

Following a brief preliminary hearing Tuesday morning, Whitley District Judge Cathy Prewitt ruled that there was sufficient evidence against Tony A. Duvall, 37, of Harrodsburg, to forward the case against him onto a Whitley County Grand Jury for consideration.

Corbin Police Lt. Coy Wilson charged Duvall with first-degree wanton endangerment, theft by unlawful taking – firearm, attempted theft by unlawful taking of an auto valued at $500 or more but less than $10,000, theft by unlawful taking of contents from a vehicle valued at less than $500, second-degree criminal mischief, and public intoxication – controlled substance.

Police were called to the scene at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Jan. 29 in response to a report of a man, later identified as Duvall, sitting inside a white truck in the employee parking area, who was armed with a rifle.

“Caller reported that the above violator (Duvall) had fired rounds from a rifle in the parking lot,” Corbin Police Lt. Coy Wilson wrote in the arrest citation adding that Duvall admitted to firing three rounds from the rifle and had several additional rounds in his pocket.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Duvall sitting in the truck with a loaded rifle that he admitted taking from the cargo box of the truck, according to the arrest citation.

Wilson added that the truck ignition had been damaged with a screwdriver.

When questioned about the damage, Wilson said Duvall admitted he had popped the truck’s door lock and attempted to steal it.

Corbin Police Officer Estes Rhodes, who testified during Tuesday’s preliminary hearing, noted that the case has already been presented to the grand jury.

Prewitt ordered Duvall to report to Whitley Circuit Court on Feb. 17 to see whether he has been indicted.

Prewitt denied a request from public defender Adam Delph for Duvall’s bond to be changed to a surety or signature bond. He noted that Duvall was classified as a low risk on the pretrial assessment.
