Defense was the key to Corbin’s success in the Area Two Little League Tournament at North London last week. Corbin rolled past North Laurel 8-0 then belted South London 15-0 to win the area title.
They will move on to the district level where the winner advances to the Little League State Tournament.
Against South London in the finals of the winners’ bracket, the win was a home run derby for Corbin. Travis Smith hit the first home run of the game in the top of the first inning. Jared Barton added a three-run homer before the inning was over and Corbin led 6-0.
Trace Vorbeck mowed down the opposition and the offense picked up three more runs in the top of the second. Brady Foley answered with a three run homer to put Corbin ahead 9-0.
The game ended early as Corbin scored four times in the third and added two in the fourth for a 15-0 lead.
Vorbeck scattered four hits in the win while not yielding a run.
In two games, Corbin has won by a 23-0 score while giving up 11 hits.
Against North London in the tournament opener, Corbin’s Derek Barton scattered seven hits but the defense didn’t give up a run.
Corbin’s quick style of play on the bases have led the team to a successful start. “We want to be aggressive and we will run the bases if you let us,” said manager Burley Foley.
And practice has paid off according to winning pitcher, Vorbeck. “We have practiced a lot on defense,” he said. “We have worked real hard on defense and pitching.”
Corbin got off to a shaky start against North London in the first game but have settled down according to their coaches.
North London loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with one out but its defense rose to the occasion. With the bases full and one out, Tyler Perry hit back to Jared Barton on the mound. He got the runner heading home on a force play at the plate. Catcher Travis Smith then threw out Perry going to first for the double play.
That was the turning point for Corbin. The offense went to work and scored three runs for the early lead. Vinny Hoover got the scoring started when he reached base on a fielder’s choice. Then back to back hits by Dirk Berta and Eric Jones led to a 3-0 lead.
Corbin scored four runs in the bottom of the second and finished off the scoring in the bottom of the third with a solo run.
Barton was able to hold off South London in the late innings. He retired seven in a row before North London rallied in the sixth inning to load the bases. Again the defense bent but refused to break when Jones throw to first ended the game.
Corbin moves on to the District Four Tournament.
