UC Homecoming Oct. 22-23, week named Patriot Week

The University of the Cumberlands is planning a big homecoming celebration this year, including free carnival rides, and Williamsburg is planning to help with the celebration.

During its regular monthly meeting Monday, the Williamsburg City Council approved a proclamation making Oct. 18-23 “Patriot Week” in the city of Williamsburg.

“We have homecoming coming up for UC next week,” said Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison. “We are going to try and work with our downtown people and really try to do UC homecoming up this year.”

UC’s homecoming is Oct. 22-23.

The proclamation noted that the school was founded in 1888 originally as known as Williamsburg Institute, and later, following the acquisition of Highland College in 1913, became Cumberland College. The school changed its name to the University of the Cumberlands in 2005.

The proclamation further notes that UC is designated as a military friendly school, and has been recognized regionally and nationally as a leader for its commitment to excellence, applied learning, teaching, innovation, research, diversity, athletics and community engagement.

Councilwoman Erica Harris noted that there will be a free carnival set up from 8-10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, and from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 as part of the celebration.

The community is welcome to attend the festivities.
