Two local softball players sign with Cumberlands

This past week two local high school softball players signed on to play for the University of the Cumberlands beginning next season.
Committing first to the Lady Patriots on Friday, May 8 was Corbin catcher Callie Schoolcraft. UC Head Coach Angie Dean said of Schoolcraft, “Her command and knowledge of the game is going to help her a lot. My returning catcher is a senior, so she will get to learn from her, but she is also going to get to see a lot of action right away. She is a good student that comes from a great family and a great program. This was an easy decision for us.”
Corbin Head Coach Jake Mahan added, “Anytime we have somebody sign it is a big day for our softball team. Callie was unanimously voted by her teammates as one of our four captains this year, and that just really shows you the kind of person she is. I’m very proud of her. This is a great opportunity for her to continue her education at one of the best colleges in Kentucky, and she also gets to continue her athletic career as well. Not many people get to do that.”
Finally, Schoolcraft said, “I’ve had this dream since the sixth grade, and I’m just really excited to get started. I’m sure that things are going to be great for me at UC. All of the girls have been very welcoming, and I’m looking forward to the future. I can’t wait.”
Schoolcraft also wanted to thank all of those who have supported her during this process, including her family, coaches, and teammates.

On Monday, May 11 Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jacket pitcher Marah Crusenberry also signed on to play for UC next spring.
Coach Dean said of Crusenberry’s signing, “I think Marah will add a lot of athleticism to our team. She wants to try out for a couple of different positions, but I know that she is going to work hard no matter where we put her. She also has the grades to stay at it, and we’re really, really lucky to have her sign with us.”
First-year Lady Jackets softball Head Coach Jason Prewitt said, “This is awesome. Marah is a great kid, and she has really taken on the leadership role for us this year. She has worked hard, and now that hard work has paid off. I’m proud of her.”
Speaking about her future with UC, Crusenberry said, “I’m really thankful to be able to continue my softball career. It has always been a dream of mine to play in college, so I’m grateful that Coach Dean has allowed me to do that. I’m also thankful to be able to stay close to home as I continue to live out my dream. UC has a great program, and everything seemed right about going there.”
