Two local athletes sign college deals Thursday

Whitley County golfer Alexis Gibson was surrounded by family, coaches and school personnel as she signed with Union College Thursday afternoon
A pair of local athletes signed on to compete at the college level Thursday, December 3.
From Whitley County High School, golfer Alexis Gibson has inked with Union College in Barbourville. Gibson, who recently made an appearance in the 2015 KHSAA state championship golf tournament, said of the opportunity, “I am extremely excited to play for Union. I love the coach, I love the program, and I get to stay close to home. I am really looking forward to taking my game to the next level.”
Gibson’s future coach at Union, Tony Carruba, said of his new signee, “I’m really excited about signing Lexi. I think she will be able contribute right away, and I expect her to be playing for us next year.”
Whitley County girls golf Head Coach Matt Anderson said of his outgoing senior, “I’m excited for Lexi, because I know the amount of work that she has put into this, and to see that hard work pay off is just great to see. She deserves it.”

Corbin cross country runner Tyler Hinkle also committed to become a college athlete Thursday, signing with the University of Pikeville
Also Tuesday, Corbin High School track and cross country runner Tyler Hinkle committed to run for the University of Pikeville.
CHS track and cross country Head Coach Tyler Harris said of the signing, “Anytime you get to see a kid earn a scholarship it is always a proud moment. Tyler is a hard worker, a good student, and he should fit in well at UPike. I think this is a good landing spot for him, and I believe that he will hit his peak while there. I know he’s really excited, and we are all excited for him.”
