Two In A Row
In a game that had as many fireworks as the Fourth of July, the Corbin Redhounds were able to make the most big plays including an Andy Millard game clinching interception with under two minutes to go to seal a 34-31 victory over rival Middlesboro.
Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell was happy to come away with a rivalry win.
“Huge win, its a huge win for the community, Middlesboro’s always a big rivalry game here,” said Jewell. “They (Corbin) rose to the occasion tonight and played an excellent ballgame.”
The offensive outburst started early as Corbin hit a home run on their opening play. The big play came in the form of a Clint Cashen to Eric Blackwood 73 yard touchdown pass. Chance Hendrickson made good on the point after to give the Redhounds an early 7-0 lead.
Midway through the first quarter, Middlesboro answered the early touchdown with a big play of their own. A Corbin punt backed them down inside their own ten yard line, but on the Yellow Jacket’s second play Trevor Hoskins found Andrew Breeding who streaked down the middle of the field for a 90 yard touchdown. Middlesboro’s kick was no good and Corbin lead 7-6 at the 4:57 mark of the opening frame.
After stalling a Corbin drive, Middlesboro went to work. They again used a quick strike offensive attack. This time it came on the ground when Hoskins took off for a 76 yard touchdown sprint. The two point conversion was no good, but the Yellow Jackets still led 12-7.
When Corbin regained possession it was their turn to have some fun on offense. They used their passing game to move down the field taking advantage of the Yellow Jackets’ man-to-man coverage. Blackwood hauled in three Cashen passes for a total of 67 yards on the drive with the best being a 20 yard touchdown grab. Blackwood finished the game with 6 catches for all of the Redhounds’ 184 yards receiving. The kick attempt was blocked leaving the score 13-12 in favor of Corbin.
After Corbin had proved they could throw the ball, they decided to show off the running game. The drive consisted of two Freeman runs one of 45 yards and the other 26 with the latter going for a Redhound touchdown. Again, Middlesboro blocked the kick and held the Corbin lead to 19-12.
The Yellow Jackets were able to tack on a big touchdown late in the first half They mixed in a nice passing game and some shifty running plays to move down field. Cornelius Ford cashed in on two shovel passes for a total of 46 yards that setup the score. The scoring play came in the fashion of a 3 yard run by Casey Earls with only 0:21 left in the half. However, the kick was wide and Corbin retained a 19-18 halftime lead.
The third quarter was defense dominated early, but Middlesboro found a way to the end zone late. Putting together a 13 play, 57 yard drive, the Yellow Jackets went back on top. They found pay dirt when Hoskins hit Earls on a 6 yard touchdown pass. Their two point conversion attempt came up short, but they now led 24-19 with 2:45 left in the third.
Not to be outdone, Corbin continued the track meet with a long drive of their own. The Redhounds put together an impressive 12 play, 87 yard game changing drive. In a series that featured Corbin’s traditional smash mouth style, coupled with a few timely passes, the Redhounds scored again. Corbin got into the end zone on foot for the first time of the night when Blackwood left a few defenders standing still with some nice moves for a 25 yard scoring highlight. Blackwood tacked on the two point conversion to give Corbin a 27-24 advantage.
When getting the ball back, the Corbin offense put the finishing touches on the win by pounding the ball on the ground and scoring after only four plays. Freeman broke loose for a 28 yard run to increase the Corbin lead. Freeman finished the game with 172 yards rushing on 18 carries. Chance Hendrickson added the extra point to give the Redhounds a 34-24 cushion.
Middlesboro didn’t give in as they quickly scored on their next possession. It was Hoskins and Earls connecting again this time for a 35 yard touchdown pass with 3:24 to go in the game. Hoskins tacked on the point after kick to bring the Yellow Jackets to within 34-31
When Corbin was forced to punt, Middlesboro made the game very interesting. Starting from their own 3 1, they began to march back down the field. After gaining a first down, the Corbin defense led by seniors Andy Millard and Josh McHargue came up with the play they needed. The big play came from Millard as he stepped in front of a Hoskins pass for the game saving interception and sent the Corbin faithful home happy with a 34-31 Redhound victory.
Middlesboro Head Coach was pleased to see his team fight throughout the game.
“I thought the kids showed a lot of heart coming back, said Roark. “We still had a chance late in the game.”
The win was a positive note Coach Jewell was glad to carry into the open week.
“Its huge heading into our open week,” said Jewell. “Let them have a little break and heal up and be kids just a little bit and regroup their minds and get ready to try to play district and get ready for some playoffs.”
Corbin is open this week, but will return to action October 7 to start district play as they host the Wayne County Cardinals.
