TWO IN A ROW
Corbin girls soccer coach Eric Steely has been pleased with this team’s play of late. The Lady Redhounds have scored two shutouts in a row, beating Middlesboro last week, 4-0 then turning back Estill County Monday night, 3-0.
In Monday’s win over Estill County, Steely said. “I thought we got off to a slow start there in the beginning but after we got going they really turned it on.”
“We played with a lot of aggressiveness and took over the game and controlled the game in the second half for the most part,” said Steely.
Freshman Amerah Dixon got the Lady Redhounds on the scoreboard late in the first half on an assist by freshman Whitney Baker. The goal came with 8:02 left in the first half.
“We played with a lot of aggressiveness and a lot of hustle,” Steely said. “I was very proud of them.”
The second half was all Corbin as the Lady Redhounds held Estill County to one legitimate shot on goal. However, at the Estill County end of the field senior goalkeeper Monica Noland was turning back shot after shot by the Corbin offense.
Dixon fired in her second goal of the game eight minutes into the half on an assist by Baker. Sophomore forward Kaitlin Baker added a goal with 14:17 left in the game for a 3-0 lead by the Lady Redhounds.
Corbin fired 16 shots on goal in the second half alone against Noland and company.
“We’ve won three out of the last four,” said Steely. “We really started to pick it up against Oneida (Tn) and have been playing well since. I’ve really been proud of their play lately.”
The only loss was a district setback to the hands of South Laurel, 4-0.
The Lady Redhounds (5-2-2) will travel to Hazard Saturday for a 12 p.m. game against the 1-6 Lady Bulldogs. They will host North Laurel in a district game Monday at 6 p.m.
“I would like to come out Saturday and not look ahead to the game with North Laurel,” said Steely. “I would like to have a good showing against Hazard and go into the North Laurel game with a lot of confidence.”
