Two facing charges after I-75 crash Monday

A Williamsburg woman and two children got an ambulance ride to the hospital to get checked out early Monday evening before the woman was charged with DUI following a single-vehicle crash on I-75.

Meanwhile an adult passenger in the vehicle skipped the trip to the hospital and went straight to the Whitley County Detention Center where he was charged with public intoxication and two other offenses.

The wreck happened about 5:30 p.m. Monday between the 17 and 18-mile markers of I-75 near the southbound lane.

Angel Chancelor, 24, of Williamsburg, was driving a black Saturn Ion south on her way home to Cemetery Road, when she went off the roadway into the median, said Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy James Fox.

Chancelor told police that she didn’t know what happened.

Witnesses told police that they saw the vehicle swerve, go into the median and flip over before coming to rest on its wheels, Fox noted.

Fox charged Blake F. Brooks, 28, a passenger in the vehicle, with public intoxication controlled substance excludes alcohol, possession of a legend drug and for having a prescription controlled substance not in its proper container.

Whitley County EMS transported Chancelor and two young children to Baptist Health Corbin to get checked out.

After she was released from the hospital, Deputy Jonas Saunders arrested Chancelor about 9 p.m. and charged her with driving while under the influence of alcohol/drugs, endangering the welfare of a minor and failure to use child restraint device.

The two children in the vehicle are believed to have suffered minor injuries. Goldbug Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

None of the occupants in the vehicle had to be extricated, and all four were walking around following the crash.
