Two area athletes sign college deals
Whitley County’s Amy Shupe signs with UPike women’s soccer
Two more coverage area athletes signed college deals this week – Amy Shupe (soccer, Whitley County) and Austin Wilson (bowling, Lynn Camp).
On Thursday, Shupe signed on to play as a member of the women’s soccer team at the University of Pikeville beginning this fall. She said of the opportunity, “This is a big accomplishment for me. I’m very excited. I really want to go to UPike because of their nursing program. I know they have a really good one there, plus I get to continue playing soccer. This is just amazing. I have been dreaming about this for a long time.”
Whitley County Lady Colonels soccer Head Coach Kelly Sawyers said of Shupe’s signing, “I’m so happy for her. She really has a love for this game, and I think that will take you farther than your skill level. As long as you have heart you are going to go places, and she does. She has worked so hard over the last four years, and she earned the title of All-District defensive player this past season. I think she is going to be willing to work hard when she gets to UPike, and she should be a great asset to their soccer program.”
University of Pikeville women’s soccer Head Coach Gary Warford said of his new signee, “This is always an exciting part of coaching because you get to make somebody’s dream come true. It’s every little girl’s dream when they play soccer to play in high school, and then to go on and play in college. To see Amy sign with the University of Pikeville definitely makes this an exciting day. She has a lot of heart.”
Lynn Camp’s Austin Wilson signs with University of the Cumberlands bowling
On Wednesday, Wilson made it official that he will be competing as a member of the University of the Cumberlands’ bowling team later this year. He has been coached by Ryan and Jodie Carnes during his time as a Wildcat bowler.
