Two airlifted following Saturday wreck in Corbin

Two people were airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center following a head-on collision on Cumberland Falls Hwy. Saturday night.

Corbin Police Lt. James Miller said the crash occurred about 6:25 p.m. when a 2014 Lexus attempted to pass another vehicle travelling south on U.S. 25W near Bubby’s Barbecue and struck a pickup truck travelling north.

Miller said the driver of the pickup, identified as 44-year-old Cecilia Simpson of Artemus, and the driver of the Lexus, identified as 37-year-old Jeff Gregory, both had to be extricated.

Corbin Fire Department Battalion Chief Bryan Jenkins said firefighters used the Jaws-of-Life to cut the driver’s side door off of each vehicle.

Ambulances transported Simpson and Gregory to Oak Grove Elementary School where a helicopter landing zone was established.

Miller said four other passengers in the pickup were taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin with minor injuries.

U.S. 25W was closed to traffic for approximately one-and-a-half hours.

Miller said while there was nothing at the scene to indicate the use of drugs or alcohol, it remains under investigation.

“We are investigating because we could not get a good assessment of the drivers because of their injuries,” Miller said.

Whitley EMS and Knox EMS also responded to the scene.
