Turning out best

Sometimes you can make a bad thing good. That’s what happened Saturday night when I was invited to judge a Hawaiian Tropics beauty pageant at the Daniel Boone Motocross Park. It had to be the most disorganized pageant I have ever judged and I was shocked to say the least when the girl I picked last ended up being runner-up.
While being bored out of my skull I watched most of the races and found out Whitley County had its share of racers. Most of which were from Williamsburg. So, I plan on going back soon to cover some of their races.
I found out one of the racers, Gabriel Collett was from Williamsburg. But the unique thing about Collett is the fact that he has driven three and a hour hours to race at Daniel Boone Motocross. Not only that but he is in the Army at Fort Campbell.
The Williamsburg High School graduate said he would like to race in the new East/West series but it will be hit and miss for him this year. He will be deployed to Iraq later this year.
He has been racing at Daniel Boone since he was 13 years old and is 21 now. “Daniel Boone Motocross has been growing every year. For a long time I was the only one from Williamsburg.
He was joined last weekend by Dustin Roberts, Travis Blaylock and Brandon Blaylock. A special thanks to Tonya Anderson and Jerry Williams for giving me the tip and making my trip to the course worthwhile.
Redhounds baseball
It’s been a busy week preparing for the Redhounds appearance in the baseball state tournament. The Redhounds seem really excited about the chances of reaching the Final Four for the second time in school history.
It’s hard for me to believe this is just the only time the Redhounds have gone to a state baseball tournament. This is a deep athletic sports community and when I heard that this was only the second time Corbin had won the region, I was surprised to say the least.
I know they have been knocking on the door for several years now and the leadership of this senior class really paid off.
Among the large senior class are Kenny Kysar, Dempsey Ballou, Travis Prewitt, Jake Mahan, Tom Watkins, Jake McDaniel, Andrew Parks, Hobe Watkins, Brent Mozingo and Andrew Davis.
What a group! I’m sure you could put those 10 players on the field and win most of the games the Redhounds have played this season.
Welcome Pikeville
Although I missed my chance in talking with coach Chris Lawson, I know the Pikeville Panthers, like the Redhounds have a great tradition when it comes to high school sports. I was the sports editor of the News-Express for two years back in the 80s and really liked the town.
I’ll never forget the names of Hillard Howard, Gene Davis, David Thomas, Chris McNamee (who played on my Senior League team), Ken Trivette and the many many more friends I gained while in Pikeville.
I’m sure coach Lawson will bring an outstanding, classy team to Corbin this week. Good Luck Panthers!
