Tuesday Night Volleyball Highlights: Corbin wins district title, Whitley advances to region
The Corbin Lady Hounds advanced to Tuesday night’s 50th District championship at North Laurel High School by winning a five set thriller against South Laurel on Monday (see the full story in the 10/19 edition of the News Journal).
The Hounds met up with the host Lady Jaguars in the district finals, but this time they didn’t need a full five sets to get the job done. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-23 wins in sets one and two. Set three went to North, 25-16, but Corbin came back and won set four, once again by a score of 25-23.
This 3-1 victory improves the Lady Hounds to 15-14 on the year, and allows them to enter region tournament play next week as a district champion.
Also hoping to enter region play as a district champion are the Whitley County Lady Colonels, who played their first game in this year’s 51st District tournament at Barbourville Tuesday.
The Lady Colonels’ opponents in round one were the Lynn Camp Lady Cats, who came into the contest not having won a single set all year. That losing streak continued Tuesday, as the Lady Cats fell to Whitley 3-0 (25-6, 25-5, 25-13), ending their 2016 season with a dismal 0-22 record.
The 26-9 Lady Colonels will now face Knox Central in the district finals Thursday at 6:00 p.m. before hosting the 2016 13th Region tournament next week at Whitley County High School. Be sure to look in the 10/26 edition of the News Journal for coverage from the region tourney.
