TUESDAY HIGHLIGHTS
.The Corbin Redhounds clinched the 50th District’s number one seed with a 67-57 overtime win in London Tuesday night.
The Redhounds spotted the Cardinals a 14-4 lead before Corbin battled back with the last five points of the quarter.
Robbie Igo scored off a rebound basket and Travis Smith nailed a three-point buzzer beater as the ‘Hounds trailed 14-9 at the end of one.
The Redhounds (15-4) tied the game on a three-point play by Brody Freeman midway through the quarter then eased into a 31-26 lead at the half.
Corbin came out in the third quarter and took control of the game as Smith scored the first three baskets to extend the Redhounds’ lead to ten, 38-28.
Freeman and Matthew Taylor added back-to-back baskets as the lead grew to 15 points.
With Corbin on top, 45-30, the Cardinals made a run and closed the gap to six on a basket by Austin Schaser.
The Cardinals (9-11) scored nine straight points before Taylor Jones netted two free throws for a 47-39 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Cardinals used the long ball to come back and tie the game. Sophomore Matthew Slavey and Schaser ignited the run.
Slavey’s basket with less than a minute left sent the Cardinals ahead, 52-51, but Freeman nailed two free throws with :26 to put the Redhounds back on top.
Dillon Tabor forced the overtime period, but it was Corbin taking charge in the extra period.
A cool, calm Freeman hit 10-of-10 from the line in the final two minutes to pull out the win.
Freeman finished the game with 19 points, 13 of those coming from the free throw line.
Smith finished with 17 points while Igo closed out the night with 10 points.
Jackets fall
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets hoped to make the trip back to Eastern Kentucky University to play in the upcoming All “A” Small School Classic.
The Yellow Jackets (8-8) would have to get past the Barbourville Tigers and that didn’t happen as Coach Dinky Phipps’ team pulled out a 68-50 win at the Lions’ Den at Pineville High School.
Although eighth grader Skyler Griffith hit four 3-pointers and led the Jackets with 14 points, Williamsburg had a tough time with the Tigers’ defense.
It was the Yellow Jackets taking the early lead in the first quarter as Williamsburg ran out to a 10-4 lead behind Cameron Smoak, J.P. Payne, Kevin Hoffman and Jared Barton.
The Jackets held off the Tigers and led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
A trey by Griffith gave the Jackets their biggest lead of the game at 17-10, but junior guard Josh Hildebrand got hot and helped the Tigers outscore the Jackets 22-13 in the second quarter. Hildebrand had two 3-pointers and two baskets in the lane for 10 points in the period.
It was Travis Beck three-point play with 3:03 left in the quarter that tied the game 23-23.
Griffith hit his second long ball and Smoak hit one of two from the line as the Jackets recaptured the lead, 27-23.
However, Barbourville went on a 9-0 run to close out the half with a 32-27 lead. The Tigers pulled away with the first five points of the third quarter.
