Tues Night Highlights: District baseball and softball coverage for April 17, 2018

Regular season district play opened up Tuesday for area high school baseball teams, with the Whitley County Colonels hosting the Corbin Redhounds and the South Laurel Cardinals hosting the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets.

The Redhounds went to Whitley County Tuesday looking to keep a three-game win streak alive. On the other hand, the host Colonels were hoping to hang on to their region-best win-loss record. In the end, it was Corbin who was able to come out on top by the final score of 12-4, improving them to 10-4 on the season.

Kyle Edmisten and Dylan Wilson teamed up on the pitching mound for Whitley, striking out a total of seven batters, but it wasn’t enough as a late-game charge helped put the Hounds over the top. The visitors scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, and were led on the night by Noah Taylor, who went four-for-five at the plate, including two homers, knocking in a total of four runs. Teammate Chase Estep also homered in the win.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 11-4 overall.

Also looking to continue their winning ways Tuesday were the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets. With senior Jake Harrison leading the charge at the plate, the Jackets’ offense has exploded recently. They had won nine straight games by a combined score of 107-35 leading up to their contest against the Cardinals, and they were able to keep that positive momentum going in London, winning 4-1 to put them at 11-2 on the year.

In 50th District softball action Tuesday, crosstown rivals squared off when the Williamsburg Lady Jackets made the short trip to face off against the Whitley County Lady Colonels. The Lady Jackets looked to be in control with a 6-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but the host Lady Colonels added one run in the bottom of the sixth, followed by six more in the bottom of the seventh to come away with the 8-6 victory.

It was a three-run homerun by Whitley County’s Hannah Rains that sealed the deal and gave her team the win, improving them to 8-3 this season. As for Williamsburg, they have now suffered three losses in a row to district opponents, and currently sit at 4-4 overall.

In the 51st District, the Lynn Camp Lady Cats hosted Barbourville Tuesday. The Cats lost 14-11 in eight innings, leaving their overall season record at 7-5.
