Triple Threat
The Lynn Camp Wildcats opened their home schedule on a good note as seniors Jimmy Chaffin, Josh Reynolds and sophomore Joe Roskopf netted over 100 yards rushing each in a 30-14 win over Perry Central.
Roskopf led the way with 143 yards and three touchdowns while Chaffin had 134 yards . Reynolds pushed himself over the goal line once and finished the game with 102 yards.
Perry Central, who came into the night facing a lot of controversy after one of its coaches and players quit during the week and one of its players was injured in an ATV accident, looked strong in the early going.
The Commodores gave Lynn Camp a game in the first half but faltered under the pressure of the Lynn Camp defense in the second half.
Perry Central’s Demetri Travis got the Commodores on the scoreboard first when he snatched a Nick Scalf pass out of the air and ran it back 68 yards with just over four minutes in the opening period. Ray Fletcher added the point after for a 7-0 lead.
After trading possessions the Wildcats got on the scoreboard when Reynolds bullied his way into the end zone with a nine-yard run. The extra point failed and the visitors remained on top, 7-6.
Brandon Willis added a second Perry Central score late in the second quarter and after the PAT, the Commodores owned a 14-6 score.
However, after a David Mitchell pep talk the Wildcats were off and running. Roskopf put the Wildcats on the board with a 22 yard run at the 3:34 mark and Scalf pushed the ball across the line on the PAT for the game-tying score, 14-14.
After a four-and out by the Commodores, the Wildcats took over at their own 46 yard line and drove the ball down the field for the go-ahead TD. Roskopf went in from 20 yards out to give the ‘Cats the lead. The sophomore back ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-14 lead.
Perry Central refused to quit and pushed the ball into the red zone where Scalf intercepted a potential TD in the end zone. The Wildcats didn’t hang on to the ball long because of a fumble but the defense responded with a sack of Willis. The Commodores would eventually have to punt on fourth down.
It was the Chaffn and Roskopf show as the ‘Cats moved the ball down the field. Roskopf got the call from the 16-yard line and scored his third TD of the night. Scalf added the PAT on a quarterback keeper for the 30-14 victory.
The Wildcats return home Friday night to face the Whitley County Colonels of coach Mike Campbell. A big crowd is expected for this game as the teams come in on a roll despite Whitley County’s 30-21 loss to Shelby County, a 4A football team.
Both teams are plentiful in the backfield with quarterbacks who can get the job done. This game may very well come down to a defensive struggle.
