Traffic stop leads to convicted sex offender’s arrest

A routine traffic stop in Whitley County last week resulted in the arrest of a convicted sex offender.

Jeffrey Canada was recently arrested for failure to comply with sex offender registration.

About 10 p.m. on May 16, Kentucky State Police Trooper James Creekmore observed Jeffrey Canada, 60, allegedly strike a curb on north US25 with his 1999 Green Ford F150 truck.

Creekmore then arrested Canada charging him with careless driving, failure to notify an address change to the Kentucky Department of Transportation, and first-offense failure to comply with sex offender registration.

Canada was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a $7,500 cash bond.

Whitley District Judge Cathy Prewitt entered a not guilty plea on Canada’s behalf during his arraignment Thursday afternoon, and appointed the public advocate’s office to represent Canada.

According to his arrest citation, Canada’s address is listed as Highland Park Drive, Williamsburg.

The Kentucky State Police Sex Offender Registry lists Canada’s address as Letha Petrey Road, Williamsburg.

Canada’s offenses requiring registration are Whitley County convictions for first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy involving a 12-year-old victim, according to the sex offender registry.

Canada’s registration status is listed as compliant, and he is not on supervised release, according to the sex offender registry, which notes Canada’s registry type as lifetime.
