Traffic stop leads to drug possession charge

A Williamsburg man is facing a felony drug possession charge following a traffic stop early Tuesday evening on Lot-Mud Creek Road in southern Whitley County.

Third-District Constable Dorman Patrick Jr. charged Adam Cougar Fite, 31, with first-degree possession of a controlled substance, illegal possession of a legend drug and controlled substance prescription not in original container.

The incident happened about 7:15 p.m. when Patrick stopped a green 1996 Toyota for doing a U-turn on Fate Lane, which is located about 12 miles south of Williamsburg, according to a release and the arrest citation.

Fite was a front passenger in the vehicle, according to his arrest citation.

Fite allegedly appeared to be nervous when he was asked to exit the vehicle, the citation stated.

“Mr. Fite was found to be in possession of hydrocodone and a large amount of gabapenin,” Patrick wrote in the release.

Patrick also served Fite with a separate arrest warrant for theft by failure to make required disposition of property in connection with an unconnected June 1 incident.

Fite was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center. He was released from jail on a $7,500 surety or signature bond about 3:48 p.m. on Aug. 10.

Williamsburg Police K-9 Officer Elijah Hunter assisted at the scene.
