Track put in place Monday for railroad museum ‘French Broad’ passenger car

Above, city workers and officials with CSX laid a section of track Tuesday near Depot Street. The site will be the home of the French Broad passenger car — one of three pieces that will be part of the planned Railroad Museum in Corbin.
The French Broad River car that will be one of the centerpieces of the new Corbin Railroad Museum should arrive in town within the next two weeks, Corbin Tourism Director Maggie Kriebel told the Corbin City Commission during its monthly meeting Monday.
“The site has been prepared with the help of the Corbin Public Works Department for the placement of the French Broad,” she said.
She also announced that 100-feet of track panel has been donated for the French Broad River and was installed Tuesday.
Kriebel said she hasn’t been authorized yet to release the name of the donor
Kriebel gave her monthly update to the commission Monday noting that tourism had tripled in Corbin since this time last year.
She said this past weekend held huge events, including the Corbin Eggfest, which had between 300 and 400 patrons from nine states.
On Sunday, the Seventh Annual Corbin Disc Golf Open Tournament was held at Miller Park.
The tournament had 47 participants, which is the maximum number that could have taken part because of the size of the course.
Kriebel said that she wasn’t able to make it to August’s commission meeting, but that it was a busy month with the unveiling of the statute at Sanders Park, NIBROC, the Gallery Hop and Corbin Tourism having a booth at the Kentucky State Fair for 10 days.
Kriebel said tourism is working to market Corbin as an adventure tourism destination and a perfect meeting place destination.
She also announced several upcoming tourism events planned for October, including: Octoberfest that will take place on Oct. 12, and the Corbin Public Library Ghost Tours that will take place Oct. 16-17.
In addition, Corbin Tourism is also working to help start a new 18th Street Merchants Association or South Corbin Merchants Association.
