Track Meet successful
The first ever Southeastern Kentucky Indoor Track Meet was held at The Arena Saturday with the local teams hosting the event. Williamsburg Track Coach John Harris with the help of Corbin’s Ray Martin and Whitley County’s Chuck Davis were instrumental in putting together a quite successful event.
Running events along with the high jump and shot putt were held and ribbons given to the top six finishers in the high school and middle school divisions. According to Harris there were 20 schools represented at the meet.
“I think everything is going pretty good,” Harris said during Saturday’s event.
The high jump and the shot putt area were held at opposite ends of the arena and a four-lane track was marked off in tape for the running events that went off without a hitch.
“I think it really has potential,” Kentucky High School State Track Director Gordon Bocock said. “This event should grow each year.”
“I thought the indoor meet went well. Having indoor track and field is what this area needs in order to compete with the Louisville and Lexington schools,” Davis said. “This allows our kids to compete and get into better shape for the outdoor season.”
“It’s fun for the athletes and the fans. I know my kids were pretty excited for the indoor meet and I hope that the area can come through and make this an annual event,” Davis added.
“I was extremely pleased and I feel it was a great success for our area. I heard nothing but positive comments. I feel it will become bigger and better each year,” Martin said.
“It is a shame the cost of the facility is so high, otherwise we could host additional meets as there is nothing else like this in our area of the state, our athletes need as many opportunities as possible to showcase their talents and to possibly earn scholarships.”
