TOPS AGAIN
Not only did the Whitley County Lady Colonels repeat as regional golf champions at Crooked Creek in London, but senior Kayla Peace was the regional champion with a 78. She is the first Lady Colonel to ever win a golf regional title according to her coach and dad, Junior Peace.
“Kayla played well for our school. She had the lowest score of the tournament and became the first regional champ at Whitley County High School,” said Peace.
“It was a total team effort,” said Peace. Amy Hart had a score of 87, Courtney Bishop 88, Rebecca Hill a score of 98 and LeeAnna Hinkle a score of 103. The top four scores are added to come up with the team score.
“We played well as a team,” said Peace. “The course was very wet and the scores don’t indicate how well the girls played.”
“There was a lot of pressure on our players due to the fact they were defending their championship from last year,” Peace added “Our girls love playing at Crooked Creek, even though it is a hard course. We had some players shoot higher than their average scores when they normally have 10 strokes lower. But, as a team they worked very well together. This win makes school history; this is the first time any sport has won back to back regions,” said Peace.
“We shot 347 last year at the region. This year we shot 351, I feel that we didn’t fall off too much, this is due to the hard work of all of our girls, ” Peace said.
” All of the girls took lessons from their private instructors this winter and played in many different tournaments this past summer. Other than taking off for a month from last season the girls have been working hard every day for this region. We have three seniors and their hard work had payed off for them with another regional championship.
The Lady Colonels will be headed to Bowling Green this weekend where they will prepare for the KHSAA/Leachman State Tournament that wll be held at the Bowling Green Country Club Monday and Tuesday.
