Top 20
Not only is football set to begin in the area, but volleyball will actually kick off the fall sports season with soccer to follow.
I am doing a website this season to promote high school volleyball in southeast Kentucky. At the end of the season, I plan on conducting my third Southeast Kentucky Showcase.
It will be senior all-stars from regions 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. Last year’s event at Whitley County was a big success. Several schools have ask to host the Showcase.
As far as the website, I am going to feature some of southeastern Kentucky’s top players, teams and tournaments.
I have listed my super 20 for the preseason and yes, most of the teams are picked based on the last three seasons.
Alcia Elwell’s Corbin Redhounds are 5th and Derrick Lowrie’s Lady Colonels of Whitley County are 17th in the preseason poll.
Corbin has most of its team returning and should be one of the strongest teams in the mountains and could reach the state tournament for the first time ever. They are ranked second behind Rockcastle County in the 13th region.
Corbin is ranked first in the district with Whitley County second. Lynn Camp is tabbed at the third spot.
Senior League
Coach CE Brittain’s Senior League All-Stars will be in Harrodsburg this weekend to play in the state Senior League Tournament.
Corbin will play the winner of District Three Saturday at 10:30 at Mercer County High School. Representatives from District Six and District Seven will also be in the double-elimination Tournament which is scheduled to be over Sunday afternoon.
Brittain has some talented players that can make a run to the Central Region Tournament which will begin August 5 in Michigan.
Battle of the Lantern
The Redhound Varsity Club held a news conference Monday for the coaches of Union and University of the Cumberlands about the upcoming game between the two schools.
First year coach John Bland will have his work cut out in his first game against the Bulldogs and coach Tommy Reid.
UC is ranked 20th in the preseason polls but Union College pulled off a 35-34 win over the Patriots last season in Williamsburg, proving rankings are worthless in this rivalry.
Cumberlands leads the series 18-9 in the last 27 games.
