Time at W’burg Schools challenging, but rewarding, Byrd says

Williamsburg Independent Schools Superintendent Denny Byrd will be retiring June 30 after serving in the position for the last 14 years.

Retirement has officially become a reality for former Williamsburg Superintendent Denny Byrd after working 25 years as an educator. Byrd attended his last Board of education meeting last Tuesday and his last official day as Superintendent is Thursday, June 30. He says he is excited for the things to come.

Denny Byrd has spent the last 14 years as superintendent for Williamsburg Independent School District. Before that, Byrd has held a variety of positions for Williamsburg City School, including coach of the boys and girl’s basketball team, football coach, a special education teacher, and even a driver ed. instructor.

In 2001, Byrd was named the athletic director for the school. It was only a year later when it was announced that he would step up to fill the position as superintendent for the district.

During his time as superintendent, Byrd feels that a lot of good things happened with the district, both academically and athletically. He was also very pleased with the amount of work they were able to do with the school building itself, stating that the campus had been extended three times while he was superintendent.

He says he is very happy with the progress the district has made and is looking forward to see his grandchildren grow up in the school system.

Byrd also has grandchildren in Tennessee that he hopes he will be able to visit more often now that he has more time on his hands.

Being from Williamsburg, Byrd says he has no current plans on leaving. Though he does have plans on taking several trips with his wife.

“I’ve been there all my life,” said Byrd.

All in all, Byrd says his career as an educator has been a very humbling experience. “It was challenging at times with the students, but that’s what its all about,” say Byrd in an interview with the News Journal. “I’ve always enjoyed it, it’s a very rewarding experience.”

Dr. Amon Couch was chosen to replace Denny Byrd as superintendent upon his retirement.
