Three more stores now selling alcohol in Corbin; total up to 13

Three more stores have jumped into the beer business in Corbin.

Corbin Alcoholic Beverage Control Officer Bruce Rains said the two Walgreens stores along with the Shell Food Mart on Cumberland Falls Hwy. have been approved to sell beer, bringing to number of stores offering beer to 13.

Despite the number of stores selling beer, Rains said there have been no significant issues at any of the locations and all of the owners/operators are following the guidelines set down in Corbin’s ordinance.

Two more outlets for beer may soon be added.

Rains said Speedy Mart in the intersection of U.S. 25E and the Corbin by-pass is still in the application process, while Kmart officials have expressed an interested in obtaining a license.

"Kmart has not submitted an application," Rains noted.

A recent change in the city’s alcohol ordinance requires businesses selling alcoholic beverages to submit their taxes from the seven percent alcohol tax to the city on a monthly basis. The first payment is due on July 20. Despite rumors as to how much revenue this will produce for the city, Rains said city officials will not have an accurate count until the receipts are submitted.
The city receives seven percent of gross sales from the sale of alcohol by the drink and five percent of gross sales from packaged liquor.

"These percentage rates are reasonably estimated to reimburse the City for the cost of any additional policing, regulatory or administrative expenses related to the sale of alcoholic beverages," the city’s ordinance states.
