Three other Corbin restaurants owe city back taxes

While the Dixie Café was the biggest offender when it came to unpaid Corbin restaurant taxes, three other businesses also currently have unpaid restaurant taxes.

Corbin City Collector Dorotha Weber said Basil’s Restaurant and the Donut Diner both owe taxes for the fourth quarter of 2017, while Season’s Restaurant owes for the third and fourth quarters of 2017.

“The taxes are due 30 days after the end of the quarter,” Weber said noting the tax is an additional 3 percent added on to each patron’s bill.

Weber said no payments on any of the outstanding bills had been made as of Tuesday afternoon.

The restaurant tax is split on a 75-25 percent basis between the city and the Corbin Tourism Commission.

Corbin Tourism Director Maggy Kriebel said the total revenue from the restaurant tax in the 2016-17 fiscal year (July 1, 2016-June 30, 2017) was $1.4 million.

The city’s portion is, by ordinance, earmarked for The Arena.

Kriebel said tourism’s portion accounts for more than $300,000 of tourism’s $1.2 million budget.

The city has and may pursue legal action in an effort to collect unpaid restaurant taxes.

In 2016, the city commission voted to take legal action against Dino’s, Season’s and The Dixie, who were chronically delinquent on the taxes.

Within a week, payments were made in an effort to catch up on the arrears.
