The Corbin High School tennis courts will be the site of the Section Four High School Tennis Tournament which will begin Saturday at 9 a.m.
Just off their regional championship, the Corbin boys’ and girls’ tennis teams will host the first-ever high school sectionals.
The girls will kick off the action when Lawrence County takes on Russell at 9 a.m. followed by Corbin taking on Letcher County Central at 10:30 a.m.
The boys will hit the courts at 12:00 (noon) when Lawrence County takes on Russell. The Redhounds will meet Estill County at 1:30 p.m.
The championship for the girls has been set for 3 p.m. with the boys at 4:30 p.m.
Corbin captured the 13th Region title Thursday afternoon, sweeping both the boys’ and the girls’ competitions.
Brody Freeman took the singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Whitley County’s William Tan. Tan had beaten Taylor Jones earlier in the day to reach the finals.
The Corbin doubles’ team of Seth Heinss and Avery Warf took the doubles title, coming from behind to beat the number one-seeded Danny Butcher and Pete Comparoni, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Whitley County had beaten Corbin’s Anthony Warf and Josh Jewell in the quarterfinals.
The Lady Redhounds had clinched their region title earlier in the week. Sydney Ledington and Bailee Freeman will represent the Lady Redhounds in the Sectional singles while regional champions Erin Hart and Jaclyn Jewell will head up the doubles’ duo for Corbin.
The Sectional will be played with three singles and two doubles. For the boys’ eighth grader William Reedy will be added as the number three player. Reedy has a varsity record of 13-1. Brody Freeman, a senior is 14-3 while Taylor Jones is 14-4.
Seth Heinss (freshman) and Avery Warf (seventh grade) are 19-3 on the season while Josh Jewell (sophomore) and Anthony Warf (seventh grade) are 13-6.
No information was available for the Corbin girls.
The top team will advance to the KHSAA State Final Four next week at the University of Kentucky.
