Teens face criminal charges for vandalizing Corbin sidewalk
Four Corbin teenagers are facing criminal charges for allegedly vandalizing a newly poured stretch of sidewalk on Seventeenth Street Friday afternoon.
Gary Kelly, a supervisor with the city’s Public Works Department, said the section of concrete sidewalk just behind Owen’s Auto Service had only been drying for about two hours when a Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy said he noticed kids writing in the wet concrete and sticking their hands in it.
Corbin Police Officer David Maiden found the four teenagers responsible in a home near where the damage was done. After some denials, stern questioning produced admissions of guilt from at least one of the juveniles. The children ranged in age from 12 to 16-years-old.
"Officer Maiden put a little pressure on them and one of the girls, she cracked," Kelly said. "She started breaking down a little bit and crying and told him what happened."
Kelly said the damage probably cost the city about $400. Concrete workers were able to fix it since the concrete was still pliable enough to shape.
"It takes about six to eight hours worth of drying before it is too hard to really mess it up," Kelly said. "We can work it out but it won’t look as good as it would have."
Kelly said he hopes the juveniles will be made to do some community service to pay for the damage.
Officials say it is common for children, particularly, to vandalize drying concrete on new sidewalks.

Hey! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!
So I guess I should consider myself lucky for not having been accused of “vandalizing” the sidewalk when I accidentally stepped on a sidewalk that was still wet, thinking it was already dry by then. By the time I came back (with different shoes) after removing concrete from the dirty shoe, I saw workers repair the sidewalk, but that was all. Somebody had seen me when I stepped in concrete. I suppose in Corbin, I would have been arrested. I’m an adult.
childern should be punished but dam that was a little too far!!! maby a little scare but putting pressure on a 12 year old kid is a little too much. make them pick up some trash two days a weak at the park but a cop yelling at a kid come one the kid was probaly done scared anyway!!

Crimes like these will lead to other crimes, like jaywalking and not cleaning up your dogs poop. I think there should be a forensic test on dog poop to catch these offenders. I have witnessesd dog owners allowing their dog to poop inches away from the sidewalk and not offer to pick it up. Leave the little girls alone and get some real criminals, felony poop abandonment is running rapant in Corbin.
What the heck….why dont you waste some more of the taxpayers money…how much time is going to be wasted in the courts over this…a cop pulled into my neighbors driveway the other day and asked if they could watch the trailer across the street because they sell drugs there. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!! I’m sick and tired of living in a drug infested sesspool called corbin….loser cops DO YOUR JOB!! who cares about handprints…..
R U kidding me!! Corbin is so corrupt and full of stupid people! Actions like this are not the result of bad parenting, it is the result of 12 year old children. At least they werent breaking into ppls houses or stealing. And as far as paying for the damages, the city of corbin wastes the tax payers money anyways on stupid b.s. 400$ please go get you a dope head to bust and maybe what you find in his pockets can help pay for it considering the dope dealer got the money selling kids dope n e ways. Ohh but i forgot, you all r 2 worried about 12 year olds who put their fingers in wet cemente.
Obviously SIS you are not a parent. Ever watched Leave It to Beaver? Twelve year olds dont always know the letter of the law. I hear Corbin is gonna hire a Sidewalk Monitor , obviously you qualify, too much time on your hands, and nothing else better to do than hunt down and harass criminals like these children.
Corbin tough on Crime . A suggestion for the the Local City Governmnent and Police. You actually “pressured” a 12 year old girl into a confession. Isn’t it illegal to question a minor without a parents permission? I thought you could only detain a minor. I ll look for you on the next episode of C O P S. You guys are the BOMB.
Citizens arrest… Citizens arrest.. Obviously the City of Corbin and or County Police should be nominated for the Crime Stoppers Award. Great job guys you stopped a bunch of 12 year old girls from such destructive behaviour. I know i can sleep better tonite. Get a J>O>B> and go find some drug dealers and , and real vandals.
This was wet Pavement. Good Grief. I see hand prints and initials in pavement or CEMENT all the time. It’s not like they tore up hell all over corbin! Corbin is getting cheesier by the second! I could see him questioning them had they broke into vehciles all over corbin, or took spray paint to the road signs. But gees, a hand print in cement? wow!
The parents should be responsible for the actions of these children. Some parents do not seem to be able to control their children and this seems to be the result of no control. The parents should have to pay to get this repaired and I do agree that the names of the parents should be put in the paper so that all can see who does not have control over their childrens actions. If they are not careful, something worse will happen in the future that is alot worse than this.
Wow! The cops up in Corbin can make little girls cry! Good job! Guess there wasn’t any real crime happening
When are people going to wake up and see that this kind of action starts at home because parents either don’t know or care where their dear little babies are.
If the city would make the parents pay for the damages and maybe a little jail time along with their names in the paper. A lot of this activity would stop.

THIS is what they have to worry about in Corbin!? They made a child “crack” about writing in wet cement!? Holy Canolies! Let’s vote for this deputy for Cop of The Year! No, even better, let’s get a reality show that deputy Maiden can host. We’ll call it. . .Sidewalk Justice. It’ll have a cool theme like Walker, Texas Ranger! Awesome! Hat’s off to you Maiden! Sidewalks are safer tonight! Any news on that old Shelton case there? Get Maiden on it!
