Dewey Canada holds a picture of his 15-year-old son Trevor who has been ordered to remain in jail another month, without bond, for an alleged assault that injured 82nd State Rep. Dewayne Bunch in April. Dewey Canada maintains his son is innocent.
At least one teenager involved in an April 12 fight in the Whitley County High School cafeteria that seriously injured science teacher and state representative Dewayne Bunch will continue to be held in a juvenile detention facility until at least late next month.
Both 15-year-old Trevor Canada and the 16 year old juvenile involved in the fight are charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault, and are believed to still being held in the Breathitt County Detention Center.
They made a court appearance Tuesday morning in juvenile court. The public is barred from observing juvenile court proceedings, which are confidential in Kentucky and most states.
Dewey Lee Canada, Trevor’s father, said he was shocked to learn during Tuesday’s hearing that his son, who has been at a juvenile detention facility for 42 days, would have to remain in custody until another court hearing on June 28 at 9 a.m.
"His attorney told me my son would be going home today because the defense didn’t have all of their information," Canada said Tuesday afternoon.
"His attorney has already told me he didn’t start the fight. He didn’t hit the teachers. She assured me he would go home today, but he is not going home. He told me he cannot live another day out there, but yet he is going to have to go back. He is totally as innocent as you are."
Trevor Canada, who has been publicly identified by his father, and the 16-year-old got into a fight about 7:20 a.m. on April 12 in the high school cafeteria.
Bunch, who was on duty monitoring the cafeteria along with two other teachers, was the first to spot the fight and rushed to get between the two students.
Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said that Bunch was struck by at least one of the students when he almost literally ran into a punch, and was knocked to the hard floor suffering a serious brain injury.
The incident was at least partially captured on a school security camera, which is located in the cafeteria.
After lobbying investigators and school officials, Canada received a copy of part of the security camera footage showing the fight. He said it is about 20 seconds worth of footage.
"It’s what they wanted me to see," Canada said.
Canada said that he is under a court order not to release the footage to the media.
"I just got court ordered in there that if I showed it to you all I would go to jail," Canada added.
Bunch appears to be making slow progress at a rehabilitation center in Georgia.
The most recent update on the Pray for Dewayne Bunch and his family Facebook page on May 13 states that "Dewayne is in extensive physical therapy this week and he can now raise his legs on his own. Please continue to pray!"

I was responding to his two different comments! Again, the tape must have shown his child in action doing something wrong or he wouldn’t have been shown at all.
No he meant they only gave him what they “The prosecution” wanted him to see.
Isn’t his son’s lawyer the defense lawyer? I guess he didn’t like what he saw on the tape or he wouldn’t have stated that he saw what they wanted him to see. I don’t think this guy is playing with a full deck.
