Tatersall home severely damaged by early-morning fire

Arson has been ruled out, but firefighters are still working to determine what started a fire that damaged the home at 365 Ruffian Trail in Tattersall Thursday morning.
Oak Grove and Woodbine firefighters were called to the single-storey home about 2 a.m.
"It was filled with smoke and flames were coming out of the roof," said Oak Grove Fire Chief Kevin Gibbs, adding that the three members of Chris Smith’s family that were at home at the time were able to escape without unharmed.
Firefighters made entry and attacked the blaze, which Gibbs said was confined to the kitchen and living room/dinning room area. Gibbs noted the presence of fire hydrants in the area made firefighters’ task much easier as opposed to relying on tankers to supply water.
"When you have a water source, it is just a matter of time," Gibbs said of getting the fire under control, adding about 30 firefighters from the two departments answered the call.
The fight became tougher when the fire got up into the attic space. Gibbs said firefighters had to tear down parts of the ceiling to get at the fire and ensure it was extinguished.
The fire burned through the roof in at least three places.
Firefighters were on scene until about 6 a.m. They were called back about noon on the suspicion that the fire had rekindled.
"It was heat dissipating from the brick and a little bit of smoldering insulation," Gibbs said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
"We know the general area of where the fire started, but we don’t have anything concrete," Gibbs said.
