The Corbin High School boys soccer team are advancing to the KHSAA State High School Soccer Tournament after edging the North Laurel Jaguars, 1-0 on penalty kicks Thursday night at the Jungle (football field).
The win came off the heels of a 2-0 loss to the Jaguars in last week’s district final. What was the difference for the Redhounds in just a week’s turn around? “We played soccer, Corbin Coach Armando Cima said with a smile.
“Last week was a lot of kick ball and nervousness,” he said. “This week they were a bit more focused and played a lot better soccer.”
The Redhounds (13-7) had to beat Oneida Baptist Institute, 4-0, Tuesday night to advance to the 13th Region finals. “Against OBI, we were able to get a few goals and get comfortable moving the ball around. It helped in tonight’s game, when we played our best we had the ball at our feet. When it was unnerving we were playing more kickball,” Cima said.
Senior Chase Adkins recorded his second straight shutout. Even in overtime and penalty kicks he defended the net perfectly. “I’ve done this before, so I was confident with that and I knew I had faith in my team and we could do this,” Adkins said.
“I knew I had to stop at least one and that’s all that I had to do because I had faith in my teammates,” Adkins said.
Only one goal was scored in the shootout and that came from Corbin’s number three shooter, Tulio Canineu.
After the first North Laurel shooter sent the ball to the left, Adkins stopped the next four players at the line of scrimmage, batting away one kick and catching the other three.
“I felt like our defense was very confident in the way we played,” Adkins said of regulation and overtime periods. “They knew what they were suppose to do, communicated on the field and played well. That was all I could ask for.”
“It was a hard fought game,” Cima said. “They came in with a plan and they executed it very well. They kept us frustrated for a while and kept a lot of people behind the ball.”
“I think we play more of a possession game than they do and I think they had a good plan coming in. I really respect North Laurel for a hard-fought game.”
Corbin will take on the Perry Central Commodores Tuesday night at the Corbin Primary at 7:00 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the two teams since the Redhounds won last August 3-0.
Cima has put the Redhounds through a tough schedule this season and the work has paid off. Corbin started the season with four wins and a tie before losing to Madison Southern. They won two of three games in the Berea Cup.
Corbin closed out the regular season with losses to Lexington Christian and Madison Central before edging Whitley County 3-2 in a shootout. They lost to North Laurel in the championship game.
Perry Central will come to Corbin with an 11-6-1 record after upsetting Letcher Central in the regional final, 1-0. Letcher Central had beating the Commodores 5-3 in the district finals. Perry Central lost to two 13th region teams during the regular season, North Laurel (9-0) and Whitley Co. (4-2).

In reply to what you said the corbin soccer team played very well and far better than north laurel, north laurel had 2 or 3 players that kept the ball and were very good at playing, but north did not play as a group they played 1vs11 the whole game, not bringing the other players into the game, while corbin in its starting 11 and subs had players that used the whole width of the field and used each other as a whole not just playing individually but playing as a team, with that corbin had the chemistry and the will to win the game
For starters, there were two Penalties made in the shootout. Corbin’s 4th penalty taker scored on his kick to seal the win. Secondly, North out played Corbin all nite long but were significantly and for reasons unfathomable to knowledgable fans of the game were incredible undercoached for the full length of the game. For some reason North kept 9 players behind the ball and thusly every scoring chance they had fell to only 2 players attacking. Corbin wasnt better, North was afraid of losing. And as in most cases, fear won out. It was a great game, but over time I, among many have lost respect for the coaches of corbin soccer teams. They gloat when they are lucky and then gripe about others being excite about winning when it is at their expense.
