The ladies took the floor first at Whitley County as the Lady Colonels rolled past their arch-rivals, 69-30.
“Williamsburg gave a good fight out there,” said Whitley County coach Larry Anderson, “but we are taller and a little bit quicker. We had more depth than they did. I think it took its toll eventually on them.”
“They’re good,” said Williamsburg coach Jim Rains. “They shoot the ball better than they have in the past. We tried to double down inside on their big kids then their other ones hit the shots from the outside.”
“We had them 10-4 (Whitley County), we’re kind of in the game then McCullah stepped out and hit two three’s. That separated everything right there,” said Rains.
The Lady Colonels (3-1) got off to a 6-0 lead as senior Kayla Haynes went inside for the first two points of the game. Stephanie McCullah and Randal Holbrook hit one of two from the line and when Holly Jones scored the Lady Colonels opened a 6-0 lead.
Kaitlin Faulkner got Williamsburg on the scoreboard before Haynes went inside for another basket and a 10-2 lead.
Rains called a time-out with 2:50 on the clock but the Lady Jackets failed to score on their end of the court. Holly Jones added her second basket of the quarter before Williamsburg got its second bucket, cutting the lead to six (10-4).
McCullah, a senior drilled two straight three-pointers that broke any momentum Williamsburg had. The Lady Colonels led at the end of the first quarter, 16-4.
Things didn’t get any better from that point for the Lady Jackets as Amanda Brimm and Brittany Lawson scored back to back baskets for the Lady Colonels.
Kayla Dupier broke a 10-0 run by Whitley County with a basket. But, Williamsburg got stuck on eight points as Holbrook and Haynes scored six unanswered points. Haynes had two quick steals that she converted into lay-ups for a 26-8 lead.
Whitley County went on to take 34-10 lead at the half. They put it in cruise control in the second half as Anderson unloaded his bench and let everyone play.
“They play good half-court defense,” said Rains. “They have a nice ballclub. Hopefully, we learned something from it.”
“This is a team that’s in the making,” Anderson said. Really, we are not very good right now. I don’t think we are close to playing the caliber of ball that we are capable of playing.”
“I felt like tonight was a good team effort,” said Anderson. “I felt it was the best passing we’ve had as a team. They were looking for each other, going inside and back out.”
“I thought we did a good job of moving the ball,” added Anderson.
Haynes was the lone Lady Colonel to score in double figures as she led Whitley County with 10 points. McCullah finished with nine points while Brimm, Holly Jones and Brittany Lawson added eight,
Sarah Estes,a 5-7 sophomore, came off the bench to score seven points.
Faulkner led Williamsburg (1-3) with 12 points while Julia Apple tossed in nine points.
