Suspicious vehicle complaint leads to drug possession arrest

A suspicious vehicle complaint Sunday evening near Corbin lead to the arrest of a North Carolina man for drug possession and other offenses.

About 7:30 p.m., Whitley County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jonas Saunders and Deputy Chad Estep responded to a complaint on Hightop Road near Corbin, according to a sheriff’s department release.

When officers got to the scene, they discovered a man passed out inside the 2005 red Ford Focus, and the motor vehicle license plate number did not come back to the proper vehicle, according to an arrest citation.

When deputies asked for the vehicle’s registration, the man told police that there was Adderall in the vehicle, but that he had no prescription for it, Saunders wrote on the arrest citation.

After getting permission to search the vehicle, police found several pieces of a crystal, rock like substance believed to be methamphetamine in the passenger side floorboard, the citation stated.

The vehicle was also parked on land without the owner’s permission.

Saunders charged Charles Dondrell Alston, 26, of High Point, with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), third-degree criminal trespass, no/expired registration plate, improper registration plate, no auto insurance, and failure to produce vehicle insurance card.

Alston was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.

Sheriff Todd Shelley thanked the community for partnering with his staff to reduce the illegal drug activity in the Whitley County.

“We have deputies working around the clock, three shifts per day patrolling actively to reduce the criminal activity in the community,” Shelley said. “The community plays are large role in providing relevant information to locate criminal activity in our area.”

Saunders is continuing the investigation.
