Update: Suspect still hospitalized after being shot by two Jellico police officers

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating an officer involved shooting that took place early Thursday morning in Jellico, which involved two Jellico police officers.

According to a TBI release, preliminary information indicates that just after 5:30 a.m., a male subject showed up at the Jellico Police Department and pointed a gun at a dispatcher.

The man, who was identified as Derron Ausmus, 38, then left the police department and fled into a nearby neighborhood, the release stated.

Officers developed information that Ausmus was possibly at a home on South Myrtle Street, and went to that location where two residents inside the home confirmed that Ausmus was there.

Police evacuated the two residents and ordered Ausmus to come outside.

After he repeatedly refused to comply with commands, officers deployed tear gas inside the home.

“A short time later, Ausmus ran outside and confronted officers with a gun. Two officers fired shots, striking him. He was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment,” the release stated.

TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland said Tuesday afternoon that Ausmus remains hospitalized.

TBI’s Violent Crimes Response Team of Special Agent Forensic Scientists responded in order to collect evidence and process the scene.

“TBI Special Agents continue to interview witnesses relevant to the investigation. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the Eighth District Attorney General (Jared Effler) throughout the process for his consideration and review,” the release stated.

Niland said that it would be up to the District Attorney General as to whether any charges would be filed against Ausmus.

“At the conclusion of our investigation, we will turn the case file over to the DA for his office’s review and consideration,” Niland said in an e-mail Tuesday afternoon. “Our investigations remains active and ongoing.”

The names of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released.
