Stolen car pulled from Laurel Lake Tuesday morning

Woodbine Search and Rescue used a boat to latch a chain to this car that sunk into Laurel Lake Tuesday. The car had been reported stolen out of London Monday.

Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies are still working to determine how and why a car was rolled off of High Top boat ramp into Laurel Lake Tuesday morning.

Deputies and Woodbine Search and Rescue were called to the scene off of U.S. 25W about 11 a.m. after a witness saw the car floating in the water near the boat ramp.

Ozene McKeehan, who lives near the boat ramp, said he was walking in the area when he saw the car in the water and a lady walking back up the road away from the scene.

A team from Woodbine Search and Rescue put a boat in the water and was able to secure a tow cable to the car as the sunroof had been left open.

A wrecker from Bolton’s Towing was used to pull the car out of the lake.

The car, a 2013 Buick Encore, was pulled from the water just after noon.

Sheriff Colan Harrell said deputies learned the car had been reported stolen to London Police Monday.

However, nothing had been removed from the car such as the stereo or other items. In addition, the owner’s wallet was still inside. The driver’s license and Toyota employee identification identified the owner as David Mayes of London.

“There was no money but it was crammed full of credit cards,” Harrell said.

Harrell said deputies have been unable to locate the woman McKeehan reported walking away from the scene.

“There are no obvious reasons to indicate why the vehicle was taken but someone mad at the owner,” Harrell said.
