STAYING ON TOP
A 13-3 run in the final three minutes of the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Corbin Redhounds picked up victory number 18 in a 70-51 win over the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets in Mountjoy Gym Tuesday night.
The Redhounds (18-2) had a tough time pulling away from the pesky Yellow Jackets.
In fact, it was Williamsburg (7-15) who jumped out to the early 5-2 lead on baskets by Derrick Lovett and CeJay Jones. Senior Madison Johnson kept Corbin close, scoring the first six points for the Redhounds.
Williamsburg expanded the lead to 13-6 when Steven Taylor hit a 3-pointer, but Johnson nailed a 3-pointer of his own. Senior Aaron Manns scored the final four points from the paint and the teams went to the second quarter tied at 13-13.
The game was tied at 15-all when Corbin went on a 14-2 run that gave the ‘Hounds a 39-17 lead. Matthew Taylor and Isaac Wilson hit back-to-back treys in the run while Travis Smith converted a three-point play that actually gave Corbin the 12-point margin.
However, Williamsburg refused to fold and went on a 6-0 run scoring four-of-six from the line. JP Payne added a basket in the paint as the Jackets pulled within four (29-25).
Corbin went to the half with a 33-27 lead thanks to four free throws in the final minute.
The third quarter saw Williamsburg hang with the Redhounds until the final three minutes. Ahead 39-35, Corbin went on a 12-3 run to close out the period with a 52-38 lead.
A frustrated coach Tony Pietrowski went to his bench for the answer. Brody Freeman, Matthew Taylor, Hunter Sizemore, Luke Stewart and Taylor Jones scored the final 13 points of the quarter,
Taylor accounted for seven of the 13 points including a 3-point basket.
Corbin pushed the lead out to 18 points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Johnson hit two 3-pointers for the Redhounds.
Johnson led all scorers with 19 points while three other Redhounds were in double figures. Wilson finished with 15 points while Smith added 12 points and Taylor scored 10 points.
Steven Taylor led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points.
Corbin will host Whitley County Friday night while Williamsburg goes to Lynn Camp. The Jackets will be on the road Saturday night to play the Estill County Engineers in Irvine.
