It was rivalry time at Corbin Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Redhounds hosted the Whitley County Lady Colonels on the softball diamond. The teams didn’t let anyone down as they battled through eight innings before Corbin came away with a 6-5 win.
Each team had chances of winning the game in regulation, but neither could get the decisive run across the plate.
Whitley County (10-16) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Simbree Sizemore led off with a single. Two outs later Ashley Lindsay smacked a single to score Sizemore.
Corbin also struck with two outs when Sara Hill hit a single. Calli Hendrickson hit into an error and both runners scored on an Allison Woolums double.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth when Whitley County scored three runs on three base hits and a Corbin error.
Jadon Dopel opened the inning with a single to right field. Whitlie Rose hit into an infield error. A pair of stolen bases put the runners in scoring position, but Caitlyn Walden bunted three straight times without any luck.
Sizemore then singled in Dopel and Lennon knocked in two runs for a 4-2 Whitley County lead. Lennon and Lindsay, who walked and stole second, were stranded when Clarissa Garcia grounded out to end the inning.
Corbin (11-8) came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a one-run lead. Allison Woolums started the inning with a walk and sister, Sarah, followed with a base hit. A bunt by Kayla Kuhl loaded the bases with no outs. Angelica Howard hit a two-run single to center field, tying the game at 4-4. Kuhl scored on a fielder’s choice by Hannah Hart. Brock followed with a walk before Bethany Hensley and Hill grounded out to end the inning with the Lady Redhounds on top, 5-4.
Whitley County tied the score and blew an opportunity to extend the lead in the top of the seventh when Walden led off with a single up the middle. She went to second on a hit to left field by Sizemore. Moses then loaded the base with no outs with a bunt.
Ashley Lennon followed with a single to score Walden, but Sizemore over ran third and was tagged out. Moses was later picked off third and Lindsay struck out to end the top half of the seventh with the scored tied.
Despite its power at the plate, Corbin failed to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Hendrickson grounded out to second before Allison Woolums hit a single, but was called out for leaving the bases early. Sarah Woolums flew out to right field and an eighth inning was needed.
The Lady Colonels came up empty, three-up, three-down. Corbin got the win in the bottom o the inning. Kuhl and Howard had back-to-back singles before Hannah Hart hit into a grounder back to the mound. Walden got Kuhl on the force play at third and Brock flew out to right field. Howard stayed at third on the play.
With two outs, Hensley hit the ball up the middle, scoring the winning run.
Corbin will be back in action Wednesday when they host the South Laurel Lady Cardinals in a district contest. Whitley County will have several days off before going to Bell County Monday for a 5:30 contest.
The Redhounds will be in Morehead this weekend to play in the Rowan County Invitational. They will play Rowan County Friday in pool play then take on Raceland and Fleming County Saturday morning.
