SOUTH TOPS WHITLEY

The Whitley County Lady Colonels lost to the South Laurel Lady Cardinals in volleyball Thursday night in London. Whitley County Coach David Halcomb said, “I am disappointed that we continue to get off to a slow start.”
The Lady Colonels were not ready in the first game as South Laurel took control early and rolled to a 25-13 win. Whitley County came to life after that set and defeated the Lady Cardinals, 25-21 in the second set before losing a controversial third set, 27-25.
“We didn’t do well with our passing and we made too many unforced errors,” Halcomb said.
A call by the line judge in the third set went against the Lady Colonels and would have given Whitley County a 25-23 win. But, the call allowed South Laurel to keep the game alive and they eventually won, 27-25.
The fourth game was close and a kill by sophomore Briana Maynes sent the Lady Colonels ahead, 9-5. A ace by Shelby Monhollen saw the Lady Colonels go head, 11-8, but that’s when South Laurel rallied for five straight points and a 13-11 lead.
Whitley County kept the game close and trailed 16-15 before allowing South Laurel to score four unanswered points. “We just lost it after that,” Halcomb said.
“I thought our blocking at the line was much better tonight,” he said. “We’ve just got to get off to a better start.”
The Lady Colonels continue to rank second in the region behind the Corbin Lady Redhounds. The complete rankings are below.
The Lady Colonels will host the Clay County Lady Tigers and North Laurel Lady Jaguars next week. Clay County comes to Lawson Gym Monday night while North Laurel will be at Whitley County Tuesday.
