SOLID REDHOUNDS
The Corbin Redhounds looked very solid Friday night in a 27-0 win over a fired-up Wayne County squad. The Hounds seem to be playing very well, but it is difficult to tell because of the opposition or lack thereof. One thing for sure, we will know Friday evening as they Hounds travel to Russell for a showdown with the defending state champion, Russell. I trust our coaching staff to prepare for big games, they have been through the wars.
Friday evening past, we got excellent efforts from Clint Cashen, Rob Madon, Jake Reeves, Josh Sanders and Corey Sewell on offense behind the offensive line giving one of their best efforts of the year.
Rob Madon and Jordan Wagers played extremely well on defense with the always-tough Sean Nolan, Anthony Miller, Zach Woody, Josh Martin supplying the licks; Michael Campbell played very tough and made several big hits.
I know it is a long trip but everyone needs to make the effort to back this Redhound team and their coaching staff, they are capable of bringing home the bacon.
On Saturday, November 18th at 6 p.m. at Pine Mountain State Park Lodge there will be a gathering of football players, managers, cheerleaders, students and faculty members to honor Walt Green and his wife, Sylviam for a lifetime celebration. Coach Green led many young men into adulthood through his teachings on the football field, and many young students capitalized on classroom hours throughout his distinguished career in education. Many of those years were spent in southeastern Kentucky at Bell County, Middlesboro and Corbin.
Coach Green coached the Redhounds last undefeated team in 1960. If you are interested in attending, you can contact John Brock at Pine Mountain State Park Lodge (606) 337-3066.
Clint Cashen, the junior quarterback, has started as a freshman, sophomore and now as a junior. He is well seasoned and will lead the Hounds on Friday evening, and I feel the Redhounds will put points on the board but the key to victory depends on the Redhounds ability to stop the run and their great running back, Kasey Clark. Clark has scored an unbelievable 39 touchdowns this season.
The key for Corbin’s offense will be to give Cashen enough time to throw and also for the Hounds to spread the field giving Josh Sanders running room.
I am going to list the basketball roster of a high school team out of the past without naming the team. I want you, the readers to identify the team, the coach and the year.
Now, I am going to find out whether anyone reads this column or not. If you recognize this team please write to the News Journal and identify this 50th District team and the year they played. A clue is they were the Trojans.
One of their players transferred to Corbin the next year, and while he was a good basketball player, he became better known for playing billiards.
The cheerleaders on that Trojan team were: Betty Jane Angel, Janice Terry, Barbara Sammons, Shirley Ramsey, Glenda Ramsey and Theresa Witt.
The Kentucky football playing Wildcats are about to make a believer out of me as they showed a lot of offense in downing Vanderbilt 38-26. They still have no clue of how to tackle on defense. I must say they are doing pretty well. I do believe Coach Rich Brooks should learn from President George Bush and get a new man to head up his defense.
